At any Parkway facility, you may find demonstrations of crafts, guided nature hikes, ranger talks, or special opportunities aimed at the curiosity of children. Check for details in each area.
Available Facilities
Humpback Rocks (MP 5.8)is a collection of 19th century farm buildings with costumed interpreters. James River (MP 60) is the lowest elevation on the Parkway and has historical exhibits on the Kanawha Canal along with working canal locks. Peaks of Otter (MP 86) discusses tourism in the mountains over the past two centuries and access to a 1930s mountain farm with costumed interpreters. The Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center at Explore Park (MP 115) is the gateway for visitors to the Roanoke region. Mabry Mill (MP 176)is a working grist mill with blacksmith shop and offers craft demonstrations along with Sunday afternoon music and dancing. The Blue Ridge Music Center (MP 213) has Saturday night concerts dedicated to the preservation of regional music. Cumberland Knob (MP 217) is the beginning point for Parkway construction in 1935. Brinegar Cabin and Doughton Park (MP 238-242)offer great hiking facilities, camping, picnicking, and a look at the park's only structure on the National Register of Historic Places. The Northwest Trading Post (MP 258) has a delightful collection of products from Northwestern North Carolina. Moses H. Cone and Julian Price Park (MP 294-297)features the Cone family's early 20th century mountain estate which serves as the Parkway's official craft center. Linn Cove Viaduct (MP 304)offers hiking access to the Linn Cove Bridge, an engineering marvel around Grandfather Mountain. Special Programs
Dedicated to the preservation of the region's rich musical heritage, the Blue Ridge Music Center is a cooperative effort between the National Park Service and the National Council for the Traditional Arts. Concerts each Saturday evening through the summer. Most of these are free, with a few ticketed events including Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder on June 12, Del McCoury on August 2, and Ronnie Reno on August 21.
